November 19th,1934: Ugo Zannier, a
Friulian gliding pioneer from Clauzetto, landed for the first time on the
Osoppo plain in between a crowd of people cheering after he had taken off with
his glider from Mount Cuarnan.
July 18th,1935: the Regio Airport of Osoppo
n.° 247 was established with the beginning of the main works of the
experimental field, which included a cemented landing strip north of Osoppo and
a grass one in the Rivoli area.
1938: the site was used for the
production of the movie “Luciano Serra pilota” by Goffredo Alessandrini
featuring Amedeo Nazzari.
November 1941: a royal aviation school was
set up for fighter planes such as the Fiat CR 42 and G50.
February 22nd, 1943: the 50th formation
made up of 8 squadrons of 62 aircrafts, of which CA133-CR30-CR
32-CR42-G50-MC200-MC201-MC205-RE2002, was being transferred from Milan.
October 1943: with the armistice, the
German armies, having taken into consideration the strategic position, put the Osoppo Airport under Udine’s Fliegerhorstkommandantur control, moving several airplanes, of
which the BF109G- JU88-FW58-FW190-FI156-Arado234, adding them to those already
present, such as the SM79-SM81-SM82.
January 16th, 1944 : the first
and only bombing of the airport by the 15th air force USAAF with
the B24-B17, escorted by the P38 Lightning.
April 17th,1945: the Osoppo
airport was finally abandoned with the last transfer of the last BF109G left,
the “Diavoli Rossi” group of the A.N.R.
August 14th, 1969: at 2:30 pm
the Major Biro of the Hungarian Aviation deserted with a MIG15, landing on the
Osoppo landing strip.
1976: the passion for flight, shared by a
group of 7 Glider friends , located in the southern
area of the ex- Osoppo airport the ideal departure base for flights up in the
mountains, not only in the east-west piedmont belt, but also in the Northern
Alps territory close to Austria and Slovenia.
After having bought some of the
territories, they set up the A.V.R.O., the Rivoli Osoppo Sailplane Association,
and thanks to their extraordinary passion, commitment and constancy, they
turned it into the wonderful reality we all know nowadays.
1999: during a memorial ceremony, the Airfield
was entitled to Nino Pittini, a man of great importance in the Friulian and
Italian sailplane world as well as the company promoter of the A.V.R.O |
